Why is this documentary so important? Oscar or no Oscar, "No Other Land" is perhaps the most authentic depiction of life under occupation - a stark contrast to the shocking, sensationalized videos that flood social media.
Made by a Palestinian-Israeli collective, the film shows the destruction of the occupied West Bank's Masafer Yatta by Israeli soldiers and the alliance which develops between the Palestinian activist Basel and Israeli journalist Yuval.
Filmmakers Basel Adra, Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, Palestinian director and farmer Hamdan Ballal, and Israeli cinematographer Rachel Szor present the harsh reality with raw honesty. There's no embellishment, no forced emotional manipulation - just the infuriating truth. The film doesn't tell us anything new about war crimes, occupation, or the fight for Palestinian sovereignty. Instead, it shows us what those words truly mean for the people living them every day.
In partnership with Hastings and District Palestine Solidarity Campaign (HDPSC):
Chair of HDPSC, Katy Colley, will introduce the film and host a discussion afterwards. HDPSC will have an information stall at the screening, also selling books on Palestine and keffiyehs, and will be collecting donations for the community in Al-Mawasi, southern Gaza who the group has strong links with.
In the past 18 months, HDPSC has been able to send funds to help the community to build a bakery and to buy solar panels to operate a well, as well as money to buy food, now incredibly scarce and sold at hugely inflated prices; and has Zoom calls with people from the community when this is possible for them.
