Nobel Prize-winning poet Neruda is an aloof and elitist figure who seeks solitude on an island off the coast of Italy. Mario the postman is a poet at heart and tries to win the affections and attention of the great author. When Neruda begins to share conversation and philosophy with Mario, the postman idolizes the poet all the more. Eventually, Neruda helps him win over the captivating Beatrice, the woman of Mario's dreams.

Framed by an unforgettable Oscar-winning score by Luis Bacalov, the duo's on-screen charm, coupled with Radford's unobtrusive yet inspired direction, make this an undisputed masterpiece which, like all great art, speaks to our subconscious, here with warm loving humanity.

What a wonderful beginning to our season of Italian Summer Films, curated by Geraldine Doyle, including Il Postino, Bicycle Thieves and Cinema Paradiso.
