Lazy Girls Film Club presents Fremont: Afghan immigrant Donya leads a quiet life in Fremont, California. A former translator for the US government, she now spends her days working at a fortune cookie factory and dining alone at a local restaurant.

Donya struggles with loneliness and isolation, but discovers an opportunity to make connections when she is tasked with writing fortunes. Driven by a longing for something new, she sends a hopeful message out into the world that marks the start of an unexpected personal journey.

Before the film, audience members will be treated to fortune cookies and zines. You will also be invited to write your own fortunes as part of a collaborative collage!

Lazy Girls Film Club programmer Eleanor says:

"Fremont is a compassionate, funny film about a woman yearning for agency in her own life. It depicts one kind of immigrant experience, considering ways in which individuals from different backgrounds might be connected by universal experiences, such as the desire to feel safe or to be loved. It is beautifully photographed in black and white, recalling the films of Jim Jarmusch with its charmingly humorous, deadpan approach."
