Electric Palace Cinema and Afri-Co-Lab presents Babymother as part of a new collaboration ‘Blackity Black’ launching later in the year.

Babymother was the first Black British musical and captures the British Caribbean dancehall cultural scene of London in the late 90s.

A single mother determined to make it as a singer puts together an all girl reggae group named Neeta, Sweeta, & Nastie with her friends.

“We wanted to screen this film as it is a joyous celebration of Black British London culture. It throws us back into the 90s, where Caribbean dancehall meets London to create its own unique scene.

The outfits are outrageous, some of the acting and directing is fast and loose - this film is not about method performances, but capturing an energetic scene, a slice of Black British cultural history that speaks to the core of a generation that moved to it (or wanted to).

I was too young to go to the club but boy did I pre-party with my sisters before then went out!!” Anna Maria Nabirye co-director Afri-Co-Lab

In homage to the scene we are asking you to don your best 90’s Dancehall Out-Fits, think primary colour fishnets, batty riders, gold lamey and if you’re not struggling to breathe it's not tight enough! There will be prizes for the best dressed - hosted by local legends and retired Dance Hall Queens Vernika & Mrs Simmitt. DJ Chabala will be on the decks providing tunes to move to for a pre-film party, to get the vibe up.

Expect a riotous night of fun, batty shaking and a trip down dancehall lane.
