This biopic is a vastly inspiring account of the fight for equality. It’s 1956 and Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) is one of nine women in a class of 500 law students at Harvard, and faces discrimination despite her stellar brain. But she eventually finds her path: challenging sexist laws across the US. “On the Basis of Sex” does a brisk, coherent job of articulating what Ginsburg accomplished and why it mattered, dramatizing both her personal stake in feminist legal activism and the intellectual discipline with which she approached it with strong support from Kathy Bates as pioneering feminist attorney Dorothy Kenyon.

Ginsburg’s experience of sexism in the legal profession continues after she graduates (from Columbia, where she transferred after two years) and tries to find work, taking a teaching job at Rutgers when no firm will hire her. Ginsburg's determination never falters, but it is moving to witness her growing realisation that the world is catching up to her vision, and is ready for her voice.

A message from our cinema director, Rebecca Marshall:
As we have been unable to operate at our previous full capacity since reopening, and with safety measures unlikely to be able to relax anytime this year, we are facing mounting building rental costs, film licensing costs and other overheads that were previously viable when we were open at full capacity.

Unless all our current season of films sell out, the cinema will be unable to continue into 2021 and will likely close in December this year.

With this in mind I make this plea to all to help sustain this much-loved community asset:

How you can help:

Thank you.
