Want to find out more about the film industry? Book your ticket for these free masterclasses, run by the BFI Network and Film Hub South East.

Mastering Short Films - with local writer/director Jess O'Kane (14:00-15.30)

We're kicking off our Hastings Takeover with a masterclass from local filmmaker Jess O'Kane. Jess's work spans genres, but regardless of style, her interests around the pressures of inhabiting a female body, rebellion, duality and power remain. Her work has received a Jury Award for Best International Short at Sundance, a Critic’s Circle Award and a nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.

To start this masterclass we'll be showing Jess's BFI NETWORK funded short film Girl at Party, which is set and shot in Hastings. Jess will then explore the film and her wider practice in conversation with our Talent Executives Nicole Davis and Tom Wightman. Together they'll examine Jess's approach to character, story, world-building, genre, intimacy and much more.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see a film funded by BFI NETWORK, learn about the development and filmmaking process, and discover how a story evolves over the course of bringing it to the screen. Whether you're a teenager who just wants to get started with filmmaking or you're looking to get funding for your next short film, there will be worthwhile advice for wherever you are on your filmmaking journey, so make sure you come along.

Booking a ticket for this event also gives you entry to the later Entering the Industry event at 16:00pm as well (see below).

Entering the Industry - with BFI NETWORK Talent Executives (16:00-17:00)

Wondering how to get started in the film industry? Or looking to shift paths and start somewhere else? This hour of conversation and questions with our Talent Executives Nicole Davis and Tom Wightman is designed to demystify working in film, encourage attendees towards a role in the industry, and how the breadth of roles available to people is far wider than it might seem.

Having worked on live sets and production offices, in cinema marketing and film development, and with TV channels, streamers and awards organisations, our team have worked in all kinds of roles across the film industry. We're going to be talking about all of the avenues in the world of film that can be explored, our tips for breaking into them and answering any questions you might have about the all too mysterious world of the film industry.

You can also book ahead for a one to one session later in the day at 5.15pm. Book now for one of 12 free places to get individual face time with BFI NETWORK's South East Talent Executive team to talk through any questions about funding, production, careers and so on.
