Annie Hall - A Tribute to Diane Keaton

The passing of Diane Keaton has come as a blow to many of her industry peers, friends, and fans. For this second Remembrance Sunday we pay tribute to the alternative Hollywood star whose death at 79 seems too soon.

With a career that spanned five decades Keaton will always be remembered for her non-conformity that came from a sense of individuality. Although a multiple award-winner, director, singer and writer, Keaton claimed she was commonly referred to as 'the kooky actress’.

However, Pauline Kael once suggested “she may be a star without vanity” while Woody Allen said, “The minute I met her, she was a great, great inspiration to me. Much of what I’ve accomplished in my life I owe, for sure, to her.”

And it was with Woody Allen that the quintessential Diane Keaton character was brought to life. This “nervous romance” remains an outstanding high point of the eight films that Keaton and Allen made together. And the one that landed Keaton her only Academy Award.

Annie Hall is a comedy depicting a love that awkwardly blooms, grows confused, and then wanes is an authentic appraisal of relationships. Hilarious, insightful and poignant almost 50 years later, Diane Keaton’s Annie Hall is a stylish and eccentric treat to escape with. 

Held on the first Sunday of the month, Remembrance Sunday is a new matinee strand where we celebrate the life and craft of a recently passed cinematic luminary. 

Devised and introduced by Ilona Cheshire. Ilona has worked in the film industry for over 20 years and counting, both in the UK and USA, across film production, publicity, programming, exhibition and distribution.

Ilona has worked for organisations such as the BFI, Cinecittà, HBO and Sikelia Productions, with industry credits that include Hugo and The Wolf of Wall Street, and presently works with London based international film festivals.

Ilona was also the first woman to work in the legendary Rough Trade record store, Covent Garden and Music Supervision is her side hustle, having worked on Vinyl and The Souvenir, parts I and II.
