From the director of the powerful ‘Festen’ comes this edge-of-your-seat naval thriller, a dramatization of the 2000 Kursk submarine catastrophe starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Peter Simonischek. This real-life disaster film tells the story of lives caught between bureaucracy and certain doom. Most of the action is confined to the remains of the Kursk, stepping away occasionally to check in with Mikhail’s anxious wife Tanya (Léa Seydoux) as well as with a British commodore (Colin Firth) offering to help an embarrassed, hesitant Russian government.

This is a gripping and at times heartbreaking study of ordinary men, out on the water trying to support their families, while knowing deep down that any given voyage is likely to be their last.

“A punchy and poignant piece of film-making from Vinterberg” – The Times
