Jean Cocteau’s update of the Orpheus myth depicts a famous poet (Jean Marais) who becomes obsessed with Death (the Princess) and they fall in love.  But when Orphee's wife, Eurydice, is killed by the Princess's henchmen, Orphee goes after her from the world of the living to the land of the dead, through Cocteau’s famous mirrored portal.

Orpheus’s peerless visual poetry and dreamlike storytelling represent the legendary Cocteau at the height of his powers.
Starring Jean Marais, María Casarès, François Périer, Marie Déa, Roger Blin, Juliette Greco.

“If a poet has a dream, it is not of becoming famous, but of being believed.” - Jean Cocteau
