Tonight we are celebrating Agnes Varda by screening her intoxicating directorial debut. Set against the backdrop of a small Mediterranean town, she faithfully portrays the complicated relationship between a married couple (exceptionally played by Sylvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret).

Shot with a documentary feel, this stunningly beautiful film also focuses on the daily struggles of the locals. It has deservedly achieved a cult status in film history as, in the words of historian Georges Sadoul, “truly the first film of the nouvelle vague.”
