In The Mastermind Reichart pulls off the perfect slow heist. Josh O’Connor stars as a wannabe criminal who fumbles a small-time art robbery in Reichardt’s ingenious evocation of 1970s suburban Massachusetts. Failed architect James Blaine Mooney and cohorts wander into a museum in broad daylight and steal four paintings. When holding onto the art proves more difficult than stealing them, Mooney is relegated to a life on the run.

Nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival film last year, the film is more than just humourous romp, it is also a quiet evisceration of entitlement, and reflects back to our current era and moral dilemmas and the need to do more than stand by have reached an unignorable pitch.

This film is F-Rated. The F-Rating is applied to all films which are directed by women and/or written by women. Find out more about F-Rating.
