INTRODUCTION BY KATIE SPOONER FROM STRANGE FRAMES FILM CLUB
87 MINS / 1971 / FRANCE / ENGLISH
Newlyweds Stefan and Valerie are travelling through Europe when they make a detour to a deserted seaside hotel. Their romantic stay soon takes a dark – and erotic - turn when they meet the enigmatic Countess Báthory and her mysterious companion.
This screening includes a short talk on the grisly folklore surrounding the real Countess Elizabeth Báthory, the 16th century noblewoman and inspiration for Delphine Seyrig’s character, from Strange Frames curator, Katie Spooner.
Hosted and curated by Strange Frames, a monthly film club that celebrates the offbeat, grotesque and arcane, examines the unexpectedly transgressive and revels in the strange frames of cinema. Exploring the 20th century’s most important storytelling medium through the lens of history, folklore and legend.
