For the Thursday 12 February evening performance only, we are thrilled to welcome the producers, Martin McCabe and Cat Villiers to introduce the film and be part of a post-screening Q and A.
Palestine’s Oscar submission is a handsome historical drama charged with of-the-moment resonance. An impassioned epic set during the Arab revolt against British colonial rule 1936, Palestine 36 is a panoramic drama that interweaves period re-creations with evocative archival footage and revolves among characters both fictional and historical. The multi-viewpoint story unfolds during a pivotal moment for the Palestinian people, the beginning of a three-year uprising against the British Empire’s increasingly unjust rule and the impact of settlers fleeing anti-Jewish persecution in Europe.
This is a story of national identity and resistance with contemporary resonance, but it’s also a classic genre movie, its historical tapestry populated by a strong ensemble of screen stars as well as impressive newcomers.
Hastings and District Palestine Solidarity Campaign (HDPSC) is very pleased to collaborate with the Electric Palace to show Palestine 36. HDPSC will have an information stall at the screening, also selling books on Palestine and keffiyehs, and will be collecting donations for the community in Al-Mawasi, southern Gaza who the group has strong links with. In the last 18 months, HDPSC has been able to send funds to help the community to build a bakery and to buy solar panels to operate a well, as well as money to buy food, now incredibly scarce and sold at hugely inflated prices; and has Zoom calls with people from the community when this is possible for them.
