Awash in mystic power of ancient castles and chanted legends, 'I Know Where I’m Going!' is one of the most romantic visions of Scotland and one of the most deeply, passionately romantic dramas of all time. Not only that, it is just one of the many great representations of feisty women and girls from the Powell and Pressburger ouevre. Dated language and accents might make you forget that this is a great classic with a female heroine and female storyline at the centre of the action - so much so that films like this inspired Greta Gerwig long before Barbie became a phenomenon.
Independent and spirited Englishwoman Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) travels to the remote islands of the Scottish Hebrides in order to marry a wealthy industrialist (this is the 1940s after all!). Trapped by bad weather on the Isle of Mull and unable to continue to her destination, Joan finds herself charmed by the straightforward, no-nonsense islanders around her, and becomes increasingly attracted to naval officer Torquil MacNeil (Roger Livesey), who holds a secret that may change her life forever.
Sunday morning screenings include a free cuppa and biscuits with your ticket.
Live short film performance
Before the feature screening, we invite you for a special 10-minute live show; Rebecca E Marshall, artist and filmmaker, will perform a live mix of gloriously saturated film clips of the Old Town made by film workshop participants. “Listen to all the noises in the air” says the narrator at the start of the film. This short show offers magnificent visions of life all around us influenced by the lens of Powell and Pressburger.
