Screening as part of our season 'Too Much: Melodrama on Film' a UK-wide celebration of exaggerated staging, score and performance to create the ultimate spectacle. To end the Melodrama season we bring the genre home, with Brief Encounter, the most stiff-upper lipped British classic! It might seem too mawkish to be considered melodrama and yet it has all the key issues that make the genre important.
It also addresses essential problems of our civilization that have gone largely unaddressed even after the many social movements (women’s rights, gay rights, sexual liberation) of the past 50 years.
Those trains will also never stop being romantic: the lovers on the platform swathed in steam; the coal speck in her eye that introduces Laura to Howard’s suave doctor; the train whistle, reminiscent of a key moment in their romance, which Laura can also hear in her living room...
