After causing an accident that left his daughter disfigured, a brilliant surgeon works tirelessly to give the girl a new face by kidnapping young women and attempting face transplants. The doctor's world begins to collapse around him when his daughter realizes what he has been doing. Stunning cinematography lends a Cocteau-esque mood, and Edith Scob is remarkable as the ravaged beauty. This unique blend of horror and poetry has been a major influence on filmmakers as diverse as John Carpenter and Pedro Almodóvar. Introduction and post-film discussion with The Cinematologists.
