Can you tell us about a film you have shown at the Electric Palace or at our film festival?

I made a film capturing a slice of life of St Leonards on Sea Beach Hut dwellers. It was shot over a continuous 10 minute period using 4 cameras in a line, each camera captured 2 beach huts, each of the camera footages were then stitched together creating a unique and surreal cinematic panoramic. The scene was choreographed and edited together presenting surreal experiences of human interactions with the British coastline.

Do you remember a moment when your love for the moving image was sparked?

I remember that clearly. It was whilst watching The State of Things directed in 1984 by Wim Wenders. It tells the story of a film crew stuck in Portugal after the production runs out of film stock and money. It was not the script that sparked my love of film, but rather the cinematic feast of imagery that Wim Wenders gave to me.

The visual imagery in the film is extraordinary, the shots are beautifully composed, and each frame is the perfect photographic decisive moment. I found it spell-binding. This experience inspired me to search out other directors and filmmakers, so my journey into the world of cinema began.

Do you need to collaborate to make your work?

No, but I have collaborated with writer Mark Hewitt on 2 of my video installations in which he has contributed an accompanying text.

Has living in Hastings influenced your work?

Yes, somewhat. I have made 2 installation videos that portray human relationships with the sea and it’s coastline in St Leonards on Sea.

Can you tell us about an unusual event where you have screened your work or attended a film screening?

I screened Coastlines in an abandoned Ice Factory in Rock-a-Nore, Hastings. The disused building had an eerie atmosphere as you entered into its darkened previous life, it’s walls soaked in the experiences of a once thriving coastal maritime industry. Was the perfect setting to present Coast Lines.

I also erected a 16ftx9ft screen onto the outside of Debenhams Department Store in Hastings shopping precinct. The video was projected onto the screen from an adjacent building with an outside speaker was attached to the window ledge. As members of the public walked along the street during the evening they were greeted to the sounds of beach life echoing down the street and a 10 minute looped video of 16ftx9ft video portraits of people on the beach at St Leonards on Sea.

What continues to inspire you as a filmmaker or artist?

Humans.
