The Honour of the Kights
12 / 95mins / Albert Serra / 2006 / Spain
There are only wind-and trees and grass and sunlight extinguishing the dawn-in writer-director Albert Serra's extraordinary, minimalist take on the Don Quixote story. Honour Of The Knights takes inspiration from an exhaustive litany of literary and cinematic sources. It is most affecting, however, as a soulful study of two lone figures against an unspoiled landscape-the last refuge, perhaps, from a world that no longer resembles a bygone "golden age" of peace and prosperity

The Counterfeiters
15 / 98mins / Stefan Ruzowitzky / 2007 / Austria / Germany
The true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936. Concentration camp superintendent Herzog arrested one of Berlin’s greatest art forgers, now held in a nearby death camp. Herzog gets Sorowitsch transferred and orders him to head up a secret project to forge pound notes and dollar bills, to damaging Allied economies. The team are morally torn – success with the forgery is providing the Germans with a much needed boost – but it’s all that’s keeping them alive. This is a fascinating movie about moral choices and life-and-death decisions, few will emerge from it without asking how they themselves would have acted.

This Christmas
12a / 117mins / Preston A Whitmore II / 2007 / USA
An upbeat comedy centering on a family's first reunion in four years. The Whitfield clan gathers at the matriarch's house. For those keeping score during the 3-days, there is one divorce filed, one secret marriage and pregnancy revealed, two guns pulled, one whipping, two beatings, a catfight, one arrest and one very badly cooked meal. Several musical interludes fill "This Christmas" with an infectiously buoyant spirit.
