Hidden Connections
The Electric Palace Cinema, the Stade Education Project and the Fishermen’s Protection Society are working in partnership to commission two new films reworking archive film footage of Hastings and St Leonards.
Hastings has one of England’s oldest fishing fleets. Boats have worked from the beach in front of the ancient town for over one thousand years, and the Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society preserves the fishing community’s medieval right to work from the shingle beach or stone beach known as the Stade.
Focusing on the Historic Fishing Fleet on the Stade in Hastings and the old Bathing Pool in St Leonards these films are being developed in participation with the local community.
The Stade film will be made by school students, a unique opportunity to work with a community filmmaker to creatively use archive footage, while learning filmmaking skills.
The Bathing Pool film 'Love Your Lido' will reuse recently discovered footage, while working with the local community to capture memories and reminiscences of this once glamorous and thriving public venue.
The resulting films will be made available on DVD and the Internet and there will be programme of local, national and international archive film screenings running throughout the project, open to all.
