About the Electric Palace

The Electric Palace is an independent digital cinema in the heart of Hastings Old Town. This specially developed cinema aims to bring to Hastings a wide choice of films and film related events, with regular screenings of Contemporary, Classic and World Cinema.

We have a licenced bar and offer a temping range of organic wine and refreshments including Green & Blacks Chocolates.

We rely on a team of volunteers to staff the screenings and on your ongoing support to maintain a diverse and exciting programme.

The Electric Palace is open to everyone, you are welcome to book tickets in advance through this website or simply turn up on the night, doors open 45minutes before each performance.

History

We set up the Cinema in 2002 after feeling frustrated about the lack of film choice locally.

Our aim was to create a place to screen a wide range of films for the local community to share and enjoy.

Starting with an empty white room we initially set up with a pot of red paint, some basic equipment and rather uncomfortable chairs. Since then we have gradually improved the facilities and interior, with the addition of a licensed bar and a new Film Council funded projector, and of course our classic red seats.

We are a ‘Not for Profit ‘ organisation and we rely on ticket sales and the dedicated work of our fabulous volunteer team to run the cinema. We do not receive any funding for running costs of the cinema - so its important that you keep coming along, buying tickets and treating yourself to a glass of wine!

We do however apply for funding to run projects and events at the cinema and locations outside of the cinema, including our annual film festival Shot by the Sea. In recent years have received funding from:

National Lottery - Awards For All
Baird Film and TV Project
Screen South
Arts Council England
Interreg IIIa
East Sussex County Council
Film Council

We put together the cinema programme quarterly and are always asked how we select films - we of course start with the films we would most like to see ourselves! We aim to show a diverse range of arthouse and worldcinema films and always welcome suggestions or recommendations. We currently dedicate Wednesday evenings to films made by independent filmmakers, films with a local link and films that had limited release in the UK.

We have now developed a reputation for interesting and unique film programming and we will continue to bring varied and challenging works to big screen if you keep coming and watching them....
