Red Balloon
Red Balloon is a dense and intricately constructed film installation, taking visual and thematic inspiration from Albert Lamorisse’s classic 1953 short, Le Balon Rouge. Created by Thursday Artists, an ongoing collaboration between visual artists and people with neurological impairments at Project Art Works, the work is a richly layered composition of moving image and sound set within a reconstructed studio space. Interweaving film of the Thursday Artists’ in Bottle Alley, a seafront location in Hastings, and footage from Le Balon Rouge, the installation connects grounded, often constrained human movement with the fleeting unpredictable paths traced by objects born along the on the air.
Echoing the narrative of Pascal, Lamorisse’s central protagonist- a young lone boy who befriends a silent floating balloon- the installation highlights contrasting notions of constriction and freedom, isolation and belonging. Through the intimate capturing of voices and sounds, the collaborative process of events and film making by Thursday Artists’ becomes a transformative one, unlocking self-contained worlds and taking us along as the narrative unfolds into other places and interventions.
Red Balloon was conceived by the Thursday Artists and distilled and edited by artists, Tim Corrigan and Annis Joslin.
