Changes on the Stade

Hillcrest After School Film Club & Tom Hillenbrand

37mins

The Stade Education Project and the Fisherman’s Protection Society have worked with students from Hillcrest After School Film Club to create a film focusing on the history and developments on the Stade. Hastings has one of England’s oldest fishing fleets.

Boats have worked from the beach in front of the ancient town for over one thousand years, and the Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society preserves the fishing community’s medieval right to work from the shingle beach or stone beach known as the Stade.

The Hillcrest Students worked with Filmmaker Tom Hillenbrand using a mixture of archive film footage of the fishing industry from 1914 and recording the current changes taking place, including interviews with local fishermen and filming new footage of area looking at how the Stade is now changing.

The resulting film ‘Changes on the Stade’ explores the theme of change on the Stade and looks at current issues for the Stade such as the Jerwood development.
